Oct. 6, 2014 - Oct. 10, 2014: PANTOCRATOR ICON WORKSHOP. THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL. PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL MESSAGE TO BE ON THE WAITING LIST
Instructor: Colin Goode
Welcome to the fascinating world of iconography. No previous experience is necessary for this very satisfying art venture. During the five day intensive workshop students will complete a Byzantine image of Christ Pantocrator, a sixth century icon in the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai. We will use acrylic gouache and 23 carat gold leaf on a carefully prepared board. Short meditations and some instruction on the history and purpose of Christian iconography begin each day. The workshop is generally held in silence, other than for instruction and questions, with Gregorian Chant and Plainsong as background music.
The workshop meets 9am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. It is essential for students to commit themselves to the whole period of the workshop and enter into the spirit of the retreat-like atmosphere of the "icon writing" experience. This provides an appropriate environment for those seeking a time of solace and reflection in their busy lives.
Light refreshments and drinks are provided throughout each day. We also provide a simple soup and bread lunch each day.
For people coming from off island, the Lopez Island Chamber of Commerce can provide a list of accommodations.
Tuition cost of $400 includes all materials and use of studio equipment. Full fees are payable on registration. Checks should be made payable and sent to Colin Goode, PO Box 276, Lopez Island WA 98261.
Refund Policy: There will be a $40 non-refundable processing fee. If you cancel up to 4 weeks prior to your course, the remainder will be refunded. After that there will only be a refund if the workshop is cancelled by our studio.
Some participants in the workshop bring a notebook with them to keep a record of color recipes, painting techniques, and comments made about the theoretical or information- sharing aspects of the course.
The workshop is held in our studio at 95 Village Road, Lopez Island, WA.
We look forward to your being part of the growing number of people who have enjoyed and found benefit from an icon workshop.
WHY "WRITE" AN ICON?
Icons have been part of the worship and prayer of the Eastern Orthodox Church for over a thousand years. Today many western Christians are being drawn to icons, finding them a rich resource for spiritual growth. The stillness and contemplation into which they invite us provide a powerful antidote to our frenzied lives. They remind us of the ultimate reality, the reality of God's kingdom, and they remind us of God's eternal and unchanging love for us.
In addition to praying with icons, many people have found that actually writing (painting) an icon of their own can be a profound and moving experience. No previous art background is necessary. The process consists of a series traditional and well-defined steps, each of which is first demonstrated by the teacher. This is a spiritual exercise framed by prayer.
Being part of the Christian faith is not a requisite for acceptance into the course. Past students of different religious backgrounds have found icon workshops helpful, therapeutic, and artistically challenging.
