Sep. 17, 2012 - Sep. 21, 2012: PANTOCRATOR ICON WORKSHOP with Colin Goode
Instructor: Colin Goode
Welcome to the fascinating world of iconography. No previous experience is necessary for this very satisfying art venture. During the five day intensive workshop students will complete a Byzantine image of Christ Pantocrator, a sixth century icon in the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai. We will use acrylic gouache and 23 carat gold leaf on a carefully prepared board. Short meditations and some instruction on the history and purpose of Christian iconography begin each day. The workshop is generally held in silence, other than for instruction and questions, with Gregorian Chant and Plainsong as background music.
The workshop meets 9am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. It is absolutely necessary for students to commit themselves to the whole period of the workshop and enter into the spirit of the retreat-like atmosphere of the "icon writing" experience. This provides an appropriate environment for those seeking a time of solace and reflection in their busy lives.
Light refreshments and drinks are provided throughout each day, but students need to bring their own lunch. Food is readily available at nearby facilities to meet a range of dietary needs.
For people coming from off island, the Lopez Island Chamber of Commerce can provide a list of accommodations.
Tuition cost of $400 includes all materials and use of studio equipment.
Some participants in the workshop bring a notebook with them to keep a record of color recipes, painting techniques, and comments made about the theoretical or information- sharing aspects of the course.
The workshop is held in our studio at 95 Village Road, Lopez Island, WA.
We look forward to your being part of the growing number of people who have enjoyed and found benefit from an icon workshop.
