Ceramics: porcelain plates with inlaid leaf patterns, name bowls, and burnished, smoke-fired hearts and plates
I feel a reverence for the natural world, expressing this through the animals and natural forms that have come from my heart and hands over the years. From my first clay elephant at age 12 to my most recent giraffes, their form, their behavior, and character have fascinated me. In zoos, Lopez barns and fields, and wild areas of Tanzania and Kenya, I have observed, photographed, and sculpted. Recent works include rhinos, giraffes, a Galapagos tortoise, lizards, a Polish hen, Hampshire piglets, and a warthog, among others. Working in clay for over forty years, I continue to be drawn by its plastic, earthy ability to capture form and texture. It feels natural in my hands. Papier-mâché allows me to create from recycled materials, challenges my inventiveness, and enlarges the scale of my work. In art classes and open studio time, I love to work with young and old to explore their way with clay, sculpture, masks and other art forms. What a delight to learn more about nature as I sculpt and teach! |
