Jeffrey H. Hanks
Ceramics: Reduction fired stoneware & pocelain, saggar fired decorative work I`ve been working in ceramics for 35 years, 25 of those on Lopez Island. Both my high school art teacher and my pottery instructor were students of Marquerite Wildenhain who ran Pond Farm on the Russian River. I consider myself part of her sphere of influence. I worked for four years as an apprentice before receiving a BA in art. Ceramics has been my focus since I was 15 when I took it up. The intention of my work is to let the medium and the process be expressed in the form and surface of the piece. Rarely do I put illustrations on my pieces I consider the entire piece an illustration. I like the variety of working with both the high temperature of reduction firing and the lower temperature and unpredictable nature of fuming in saggars. These two processes give me a wide avenue for creative expression. For more about these firing methods visit my web site. |
